Our Leading Release of 2025: The Artist's Lux Claims the Number One Place.

Initially, this work may look more like an arduous university quiz rather than a new pop record from a musician whose previous single was a collaboration with a global K-pop icon. Divided into 4 different parts and voiced in 13 tongues, it is a dizzying orchestral-influenced work exploring feminine mystique, religious transcendence, and corporal change, frequently through the lens of various saintly figures. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme handled with grounded openness elsewhere—soars upwards on this record, buoyed by the constant presence of a major orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a long roll call of contributors. Its sheer daring by itself renders the efforts of other artists appear rather small.

Transcending Academic Pretense

That this album manages to avoid overly intellectual posturing is almost miraculous, and complete credit belonging to the artist. Although it's not the first time project to blend historical sounds and the present, the stakes are much greater on Lux, with the balancing act far more precarious. What really elevates this fourth release, outside of its multilayered melodies, dense arrangements, and engrained theatricality, proves to be a core sense of playfulness. Similar to the legendary artist during her height, there is a captivating quality to Rosalía's voice that pulls the listener up in its whirlwind. When she's breaking hearts apart, the listener still desire to stay alongside her through the journey.

A Prime Example of Joy

That playful energy comes forth clearly during the stirring Italian song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over several minutes. Then, all the music falls away, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh followed by a comment prior to a comically over-the-top string surge crashes in with comedic force. The track immediately shifts to the wild single featuring racing orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist Björk.

"The charm of Lux lies in you rarely quite understand—or even wish to know—where you is going to next."

Almost every track ends in a completely different point from how it started. A track explores the transient nature of fame over a featherlight orchestration before disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut echoing the artist's previous rhythmic style starts out moody and brooding, featuring menacing vocals, before sudden traditional rhythms and an angelic choir enter to soften its jagged edges.

The Bridge Of Experiment and Accessibility

Another crucial achievement on the album is straddling the gap between radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is no coincidence that it has become the artist's first release to crack the upper reaches of major charts: its heart contains a suite of truly catchy pop songs. A song sung primarily in the English language builds around a refrain that seems to gather increasingly infectious melodies as it spirals upward. That trick gets echoed on a different expansive track that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number seduces with its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it shares the pop culture impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, eviscerating a former lover labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale figure concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

This album represents pop on a grand level, an ambitious grasp for capital-A artistry in an era of impending artificial blankness. It rejects self-absorption for sublime transcendence, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its own inherent excess. This is an abundant well of buried gems that requires time to completely explore but doesn't seem like hard work. While other major releases of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, this record is a sumptuous banquet at which the guests around it, some intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter between discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common gossip about useless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from pop's most endlessly inventive practitioner.
